I think I've listed all the possible ways gen 1 starters can be distributed among the main characters. I guess vote other if you prefer a combination that's not possible in game (like Red with Charmander and Blue with Bulbasaur), or else just something ridiculous.
And although I truly doubt it's necessary, here's the characters for anyone unfamiliar with the names. Red: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080415202059/nintendo/en/images/7/7b/Red_PokémonRB.png
Blue (Or Green, as he is called sometimes): http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20081231194335/pokemon/images/a/ab/Blue-original.png
I summoned a baby to attract a lion. It didn't seem to work, so I tried a delicious baby. Regular baby ATE delicious baby. Horror....horror.~Gameplayingperson
Red gets Pikachu and the three normal starters, Blue gets Eevee but eventually boxes it, as evidenced by HGSS/GSC. Only game with genuine canon starters. Only way it works out; Blue has to get Eevee because that's the only thing he can get in Yellow, which seems to be canon, not FRLG. Actually, canon would be some kind of Yellow remake, where Red gets a Pikachu, Blue gets an Eevee, but the Sevii (sp?) Island events still happen.

The original Red and Green along with their remakes focus on Venusaur and Charizard. Artworks often show Red with Bulbasaur and Green(Blue) with the Charmander line. This may be a stretch, but the manga also has Red with Bulbasaur and Green with Charmander.
