Why did gamefreak think it was a good idea to make flying types also normal?

I love flying types, and the resistance to fighting would be super rad.

Stab return is nice at least.

Who can say but them? Whatever the case, it appears to be tradition now - except for Tornadus, who's explicitly a wind spirit.

The only thing normal adds, type wise, is neutral damage to fighting, and immunity to ghost. Why wouldn't you want an immunity?

All my friends (yes, all of them) say that there's no such thing as just a pure flying thing.

There used to be something important and intelligent here, but I deleted it.

A Fighting resistance is more valuable than a Ghost immunity.

Mono-Fighting is a terrible type.

STAB Return is more valuable than a Fighting resist.

Probably something to do with Bird originally being a type, with many Pokemon originally intended to be Bird/Flying.

There are still a lot of dual types with Flying and something else. The generic birds being Normal too makes sense to me, though it makes Togetic and the like more plain.
