Like you give a Poison version of this item to a Tangrowth and it becomes Grass/Poison and gets STAB for Poison moves till it loses its item. - Results (108 votes)

I think it would have to be a competitive-exclusive thing. Changing types would add a lot of customisation and it's balanced out by not being able to use other hold items.

In-game it could potentially destroy the need to catch Pokémon. Like imagine simply holding a ground item rather than catching a ground type to deal with the electric gym.

Yes, sounds awesome. Balance is obviously an issue but that can easily be sorted.
