they did localize Pikachu. In Japan i is Pikachuu.

IIRC they were going to call it Elemouse but by the time the games came out everyone already knew it as Pikachu...

At least that's what I read back when Red/Blue first came out.

Elemouse sounds horrid lol.


Anyway pikapika means glitter, sparkle or shiny. Chuuchuu is the sound a mouse makes. Squarkle? Gliteek? Squiny? Squeenie? lol.
