The Japanese names of the legendary birds, Freezer, Thunder, and Fire. I'm not kidding, those are their Japanese names.
Thunders, Shower, Booster, Crab, Cocoon are some too.
1. You forgot Ghost (Haunter's name)
2. English words sound exotic in Japanese. They didn't use common words in the language of the game's audience, they used foreign words. --- For those of you starting topics about the PS4, there's a PS4 board: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/691087-playstation-4

Why is everyone talking like none of the new-gens have puns/mashups in their names?

The ones whose English names are actual non-punny non-manipulated words? Alakazam, Gloom, Persian, Golem, Electrode, Ditto, Magneton, and Mew. And arguably Mr. Mime and Mime Jr. I can't think of any others.
Though my spellchecker doesn't like Alakazam and Magneton, they are real non-manipulated words. --- Creator of Jay's Journey (see quote!) "It's not ten years old! Therefore, it sucks!" - Nostalgia whores everywhere
