2) Always have a phazer
3) Always have a steel type
4) Always have someone who is resistant to/immune to water

2) Always have Shuckle. Dat defence and Special defence.
3) Always have Shedinja.
4) WALL WALL WALL
5) Always have another wall.
6) Never have Rapid Spin.

I don't play competitively due to my hatred of other people so I go with the following rules:

1. Always try to have Heracross on the team
2. Avoid having multiple pokemon of the same type on my team except for bug, dark, and ghost because those are my favorite types
3. Water type starter
4. Have as much type coverage as possible

Not really a rule... but I do have a guideline.

"Never have too many Pokemon of the same type."

Of course, there are times where I don't even think about following it... half of my SoulSilver team were psychic types.

My one rule is to always have a theme.
I once did this whole sprite-mixing thing for some reason, and it either spurred me to create a god-mon from my team, or I created my reaper-god-mon and made my team into the six that made it up. That one's a team of assassins, and I think it's still my main team, though I have at least two others that I would use just as quickly.

But whatever I do, it always has a theme.

Actually I tend to follow a theme as well. Though its more like "only using pokemon that can be found in my region of choice".
