Based on Eevee naming patterns...

Eevee's are always named after their element.

Flareon = Flare (Fire)
Vaporeon = Vapor (which is basically gaseous water)
Jolteon = Jolt (Electric shock)
Umbreon = Umbra (the darkest part of a shadow where all light is cut off)
Espeon = ESP (Extra-Sensory Perception, another word for Psychic powers)
Leafeon = Leaf (Leaves are grasslike things on trees if you didn't know)
Glaceon = Glacier (I think we all know what these are)

Sylveon = .........?

Given past naming patterns, none of the words used in Eeveelution names were actually altered or misspelled in any way, just had a letter or two cut off at the end at most, which makes it unlikely it's "Silver", a Steel-reference.

Does anybody actually know any viable words that "Sylv" could actually be derived from?

Everyone seems to think it means "sylph".

Ninfia had some things suggesting flying, grass or poison.

Correction: Vapour is a state of a material where it is gaseous, but can be made liquid or solid simply by increasing pressure.
There's more than just water vapour. Sodium vapour, mercury vapour...

Anatidaephobia is the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you, staring into your soul, using its duckiness.

People suggest Sylv = Sylp = fairy
There's also Ninf = Nymph

Sylv- means "forest" or "woods". It is usually in the form "sylvan".

Definition 5 is relevant to the speculated Fairy type. It will never have anything to do with "sylphs", that is just ignorance.

Which is totally relevant to the topic at hand.

There are two main thoughts on Sylph: some people are interpreting it as wind, and hence flying (I thought that myself), while others are using the link to fairies.

It seems recent rumours hint at Sylveon being a brand new type though, so for now I wouldn't read too much into anything. We can expect the name to link somehow though.

Yeah, that's a problem games had back then. You actually had to get good at them. - Mctias

You stated Vaporeon's name came from "gaseous water."

It doesn't.
Anyway, there are a wide array of things the "Sylv-" could imply, and that's why this board gets bad when type-topics for Sylveon come around.
