Why is the fanbase making such a big f***ing deal over the possible new type?

This series has barely changed in the last 11 years. Most of the headline innovations to the Pokemon series (Dark/Steel, breeding, held items, abilities, natures, weather conditions, etc.) were implemented in GSC or RSE -- people who were 9 years old upon the release of Ruby/Sapp would be 20 today.

So now, Game Freak is finally making some long-overdue changes to bring their flagship series into the 21st century (some 12 years late!) and the fanbase is throwing a s***storm about it?

Some fans always make a big deal out of nothing. Changes that would be considered trivial in other series are suddenly mind-blowing when applied to Pokemon. For example:
- Reusable machines: Long overdue. (In fact, the devs have to do less work because they only have to find one location per machine)
- Attack categories (physical, special, etc.): Has zero impact on casual players, who play through the main quest using only their starter.

If it's due to "breaking" the type chart and undoing Smogon's super-official "tier list", it's not like the GBA and DS games will suddenly stop working after the release of XY. Smash Bros. fanboys who dislike Brawl's physics for whatever reason are still playing Melee. Unless you have a sequel that's more or less an add-on pack (as Game Freak had been doing since Ruby/Sapp), things are going to change, and you might as well accept that sooner rather than later.

dropping a censored f bomb in your topic title makes it more relevant?

I wish I would've been around for the pre-release of GS. I wonder if people made a big deal about Dark and Steel, or if it was kinda like "oh, that's pretty cool"
I gotta do what?

There was excitement. Very few complaints. The fanbase didn't have a decade's worth of normalization to the type-chart at the time, and Psychic was on the rampage.

As long as Dark finally gets a gym I'm good since the new type would likely get one too.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've played Pokemon since the RBY days and the only thing I've really complained about is how ugly Samurott is (I still think its disgusting and completely ruined the Oshawott line). It completely prevented me from choosing Oshawott as a starter despite loving its design the most out of all the Unova starters... but I'm getting off topic.

Fairy, or whatever the new type will be called, is a welcome addition in my eyes.
Love me long time.
