Wy is it widely accepted that sylveon will be a "fairy" type?

I mean, where did the word fairy crop up? I quite liked the light type idea.

First popped up when the guy who leaked the entire gen V Pokedex before the games came out posted the "Fairy" type on his site's typing chart.

Then Pokemon Smash showed a video that pretty much confirmed there's a new type

And Sylveon's name sort of points to an air elemental..

It's pink. Pink is not the color of light.

Pink is also stereotypical for girls, I didn't see a female type.

I thought Fairy type was being debated before that.

I wouldn't say it was really being "debated" it's just something that popped up in all the "OMG NINFIA'S TYPE" topics.

Fairy =/= Disney's Tinkerbell

"Fairy" is a very broad term that has been used to describe everything from ghosts and various spirits to even demons and other creatures. It's about as broad a term as "Dragon," and thus it makes sense, seeing as Fairy might arguably be a counterpart to Dragon.

Plus, we already have a Fairy egg group. There is no Light egg group, nor has anything in Pokemon ever been associated with the word "Light." (Moves that revolve around literal light are usually given solar-related terms.)

Its names are the first place the idea came up. There were actually a lot of people speculating it BEFORE Hiro.

True. Every single localization of Sylveon refers to fairies, and several contain the word "Fairy". Probably the reason they didn't name it "Faireon" for English localizations was because they knew that a lot of North Americans unfamiliar with most fairy folklore would freak out and claim that the type was "girly" or "gay" (because homophobia isn't wrong, right guize?). Which is probably why the Fairy type will be localized as something like Fae or Sylvan.
