No iKhanic, the poll is very clear. I'm asking which Pokemon people prefer. Different people like or dislike Pokemon for different reasons (see here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/696959-pokemon-x/65709622), so I'm not gonna tell them that they have to base the vote on a particular criteria. If you really believe people prefer Charizard's design, but are voting Volcarona because of its competitive usefulness you're free to make your own poll specifying that design is the only thing being judged. Personally, the main reason I prefer Volcarona over Charizard is precisely its design.

You don't like dragons?

Charizard is an extremely generic and cliche looking dragon.

Dragonite at least looks cool because it does try to look like different.

Generic Western or Chinese dragons? They're okay, not terribly exciting. That's pretty much my view of the design of Pokemon like Charizard and Rayquaza (I still like both way better than Derpnite though). Salamence is my favorite "traditional" dragon Pokemon design. Of course, dragons come in many different forms, and a lot of them I really like (Reshiram, Dialga, Haxorus, Flygon, Hydreigon and Latias among others).

Volcarona is one of the better gen 5 pokemon. Also I never cared much for Charizard, Venusaur & Blastoise (or Wartortle rather) is where it's at.

You see, I consider pokemon to be analogues to animals, so I appreciate it when a Pokemon pays homage to real life or fictionally familiar creatures

That's your personal preference, and you hardly get to call a design bad simply because it doesn't conform to that particular model. BTW, it's not like the Pokemon series ever limited itself to real and mythical animals, see Magnemite, Voltorb, Grimer, Koffing etc. Hell, Volcarona resembles this:

more than Mewtwo resembles any feline.

So, one on one, who'd win in a fight? 'Zard resists both of Volcaronas' STAB moves, and has Flying STAB (however little-used it is) to hit back.

GT: Corrupted177 - Play Halo Reach, Dark Souls, Armored Core V, Borderlands GOTY and Dragon's Dogma.

Seriously? There's a Pokémon that people think is cooler than Charizard?

...I feel so old right now. :/
