Things that surprised you when you learned about the competitive environment

Before I knew anything about the competitive scene, I thought Taunt and Substitute were useless. (Because whenever they were used on me in the game, I just kept attacking and it did nothing to hinder me.)

Also, I quickly brushed off Magnemite line as terrible in Gen II because the new Steel type made them even weaker to Ground and adding the new weaknesses of Fire and Fighting.

What are your stories of battling naivete?

I thought Fake Out was a waste of a slot for single battles, since it does so little damage. But then I realized that it does decent damage with Technician, STAB, and/or a Normal Gem and also breaks Sturdy, Focus Sashes, and Air Balloons. I always knew it was extremely useful in doubles and triples, though.

The first thing that surprised me about the competitive scene?

That there is one.

And then Bruce Willis was there and he said...

Basically this. In fact I hated the line all the way up to Gen 5. Finally accepted it as one of the best bulky sweepers. Same thing with Staryu/mie and Scizor.

Most of the Pokemon I loved growing up actually suck.

I used to think Granbull was one of the best Pokemon. Then I found out no one uses him because he sucks.

That stealth rock is actually useful. When Roark used it on me, it barely did any damage and affected the fight in no way what so ever besides giving me a free turn and possibly making the fight easier.

The fact that EVERY single team i come across has a garchomp, a scizor, a rotom, a heatran, or any mix of all of them. I thought people would be more creative.

This so much. I get so sick of it. Politoed, Scizor, Garchomp, Ttar, Heatran..

I kick so much ass in OU with Alakazam, Chandelure, Scrafty and Metagross. Each of them specifically designed to take out the aforementioned HIGHLY OU Pokemon.
