How about 9 gyms and 9 badges for once? Just to change it up

Wait, never mind. Game Freak doesn't like change

Yup... that's why we only have 151 Pokemon, why every game takes place in the Kanto region, and why the graphics are still Game Boy quality.

.... wait...

Not the type of change most people mean. The standard formula can't be changed at all unless it's a spinoff game, and there're still static formulas within those series.

Beat 8 gyms, beat e4, done with main story = same formula. While I wouldn't say it needs to change entirely, it'd be nice if they mixed things up for once, like giving you options on where to travel and who to beat (I.E. a region with 16 gyms and 1 evil team + 4 e4 and a champ, however where you go and what 8 badges you get/actions you take determines how the game goes, rather than being pathblocked by random dancing dudes and basically forced to beat the gym in front of you.).

It's still change. People need to quit their nitpicking.

If I recall correctly...in Gen V we had not 8, but 14 Gym Leaders and 10 Gym Badges

Does anyone complain about Legend of Zelda almost always having eight dungeons?

9 Badges just doesn't look as pretty as 8.

Why does it matter if it's a "nice number" or not?

There's a reason the main game has the same formula and spin offs do something different. Only when/if gen 6 has poor sales relative to the other gens will Gamefreak even think about changing the main formula. If you want something else, play the spin offs or the console games.

Why not 16 gyms and you can choose which 8 badges you want...

Because that's how games tend to work.

No, but they do complain that there's (almost) always three dungeons, plot twist, then another set of dungeons.

While I agree that a change to the basic formula would be nice, these suggestions are always dumb. What would "9 badges instead of 8" solve? That's not a change to the formula, that's just making the game slightly longer and perhaps could hurt the game experience by making the gym challenge aspect feel too long.

The changes they DO add, such as contest, PWT, held items, Pokemon-amie, the movie studios, natures etc, are more meaningful additions than a slight tweak like having "different typed starters!!!1" would ever be.
