First/Second season Digimon tended to be more grungy looking, more detailed, and more obvious flaws whereas Pokemon tend to be cleaner, less detailed, and overall smoother look.
Actually, I think first-generation Pokemon had a lot more... "grit" than some of the later ones, especially in Ruby and Sapphire. Compare Venusaur and Mewtwo to the likes of Meganium and Groudon. It be cool if the sheath form is more defense oriented and the unsheathed one is offense oriented.
