also what about both, auto save, but you can still manually save when ever you want to?

Yes. Manual saving, outside the obvious usefulness for helping people make legit good Pokemon, would also kill some of the portability "play at any time and quit whenever you want to" factor.

You would probably have to look for a house to enter or something. I can imagine myself stuck on some route or in a cave with no repels. Wishing I could just quit.

Because you can literally save at any point, turn the system off, and then resume at that exact point, then save again literally a few moments later if you wish to and do the whole thing again.

Manual saving of that nature is as close to perfect as you get. It gives the player complete freedom.

I would only be ok with it if it was optional. That way I can turn it off like in any other game with an auto save feature.
