New Tri-Type Mechanic?

Tri-Type mechanic....has anyone played Tales of Legendia enough to know how crappy of an idea and how a big a headache this can truly be?

Unlike newer tales games, Legendia compressed itself down to 6 elements instead of 8, taking a page out of the book of older games, HOWEVER, you could not always be sure what was weak to what >.>

Fought one enemy that absorbed dark damage, figured that meant it was weakened to light, and it ABSORBED light too XD

That's just one example. Worst one is when a Lightning-using enemy was weak to fire, not water, which is the usual reverse-weakness, and then I got counter-nuked when I used Tidal Wave >.>
