He is rock climbing,

his name is a pun on Granate.
he has gems in his hair due to rocks,

he will be rock or ground type. seems incredibly obvious.

Right, just like "Clair" is a great pun about dragons that clearly makes sense to everyone. :P

Also, most of the Japanese Gym Leader names are indeed puns on their types. Example:

There's still more evidence of he/she being a rock/ground type user.

Gems are rocks.

He/she's good at rock climbing.

His/her hair is shaped like a rock.

Badge is shaped like a bunch of bricks.

It could be that they're going to go with a fruits theme instead of type puns... and the 'kuro' in 'zaukro' may be a pun on the character's skin color... Which... is sadly something Japan would do. The Citron name may be a "tron" (as in elecTRONic, and the Disney film) pun referencing his robotic features and scifi-looking gym.
