A good monotype will always be outclassed by an even better dual-typed (note: not all dual-types are greater than their primary mono-types). Good monotypes are pretty non-existent in terms of an "overall" coverage.

This. Monotypes only really have defensive advantages at most, and even then only in some cases. STAB-wise, they are outclassed, obviously.

Steel is a good example, as the type has a load of resistances by itself and 3 weaknesses 2 of which can potentially turn into immunities with an ability.
Mono Dragon is very good defensively AND offensively because Dragon is nearly unresisted, has good resistances itself and dragon types(with exceptions) tend to have the movepool to cover anything they need to.
Mono Water deserves a mention too, imo. Pretty good in defense and offense and movepool problems are unheard of when every water type gets Surf and some ice moves at least.

Maybe Gamefreak should consider giving mono types some advantage over dual types. Perhaps change STAB to work as 1.3x for dual types and keep the 1.5x STAB bonus for mono types only. Thoughts?

Maybe on a dual type the stab multiplier could be 25% on each type for a dual type (or 30%/20%), and then the usual 50% on a monotype?
