I actually got this idea from this thread, which has degenerated into uselessness at this point:

but anyway, for dual-type pokemon, let's have the first type be the primary type and the second type be the secondary type, which would change all of the ways things work related to types.

primary type factors all resists and weaknesses and STAB the same way it does now.
secondary type factors everything half as much.

no more 4x weak/4x resist anymore. it's 2x weak from the primary, and 1.5x from the secondary for a 3.5x weakness/resist at most.

type and resistance mixing would matter more.

example
a fire/water pokemon being hit with a grass attack:
2x resist, 1.5x weak - result 1.5 resist

a water/fire pokemon hit with a grass attack:
2x weak, 1.5x resist - result 1.5 weak


STAB for primary type - 1.5x damage
STAB for secondary type - 1.25x damage

not giant game-changers, but just another thing to consider and think about. that Inkay vs Malamar typing change would actually make a difference when throwing dark pulse and psychic around.

tbh, this would allow for implementation of those dual-typed moves, IMO. Which would be interesting and, let's be honest, the formula is getting somewhat stale. Having to think in battles more might be a good thing.

That's not how math works, it would be 3x, not 3.5x.

Has to do with biology in my opinion.

Golem, a Rock-Ground, can jump crazy high (Gary's Nidoking). Golem is also heavy.
Rhyhorn, a Ground-Rock, probably rarely jumps high. Horizontal leaps likely.
Steel and Psychic appear different by skin. Jirachi can twist and be squishy. Metagross all robot stiff.
