If you enjoy something, you should be able to do it no matter the age.

Unless, of course, that thing is illegal, in which case you probably shouldn't.

Voted option 3. The magic number isn't even the point.

The more important points of the matter is that to acknowledge yourself as too old does not forfeit your right to enjoy it, so long as you acknowledge you're enjoying something meant for a younger demographic than you- that you are doing something that gives people outside your circle of interest the right to be suspicious. The same acknowledgement one gives to, say, light Shonen series like Naruto or Dragon Ball (Say this as a big Dragon Ball fan myself), to give another heated example; this story is written for older children and young teens, and I acknowledge that, and enjoy it anyway despite how it might make me look.

Why "Not care what other people think because they have no right to judge", the moniker that sometimes comes up in these discussion, when you can do the genuinely mature thing and being respectful of other people's point of view and do so without sacrificing your own confidence. I can't imagine it's a subject that comes up too often for many of us to begin with.

The second is to realize that while Nintendo of America has been good at drumming up genuine nostalgia in older players when the time calls for it, Pokemon is not an all-age gaming institution the way Mario and Zelda are, and it is far more explicitly marketed to children- I presume many of us here are familiar with Pokemon Sunday? Or the fact that Pokemon cards still sell? You can separate the Pokemon games from the rest of the merchandise the same way you can separate Super Mario from the Mario fruit snacks that have existed since Super Mario Brothers 3; but Mario doesn't have an entire separate company dedicated to overseeing its non-gaming media. None of this stops you from enjoying the games or franchise, but it does make it a lot harder for you to make the "E for EVERYONE" claim when Nintendo and their Poke-affiliates have other plans.

And yet Masuda and others in the GameFreak team were surprised at the size of the older fanbase :/ Believe I heard that in the IGN Platinum interview and it stuck with me.

Somewhere between options 1 and 4. Age is not a valid factor, you can argue that the game is marketed towards a specific age, but that's largely irrelevant after the initial interest. If you take some random Disney game and market it as "Call of Duty" it might attract an older fanbase to give a chance, but it still won't appeal to people that don't like random Disney games.

Pokémon simply has many aspects of appeal, which span several demographics:
- Cute Critters
- Collection
- Depth in strategy
- Competitive community
- Story
- Nostalgia, of course....

Between those aspects of the game, that covers quite a large portion of gamers, even if the advertisments are only meant for boys between the ages of 7 and 13.
