The reason why the fairy type is tied to the Moon

#1solaurus12Posted 8/17/2013 10:53:31 PM
The Chinese legend of Chang'e, The Fairy of the Moon. Chang'e floated to the moon after eating a pill that her husband Houyi brought to restore his and Chang'e's immortality after having it taken away by the Jade Emperor. She was described as a beautiful dancer and able to bring men to tears with her moves. Her only companion once she was banished to the moon was a rabbit. Chang'e's dances are said to cause the moon to shine.

This is why there are fairy types with "moon in their name" such as moonblast. Sylveon, who seems to be the posterboy for fairy types, also has rabbit like ears. Did I also mention that Chang'e's rabbit is commonly depicted with a ribbon in modern tales? Well what does Sylveon seem to have? A ribbon.

Fairy type inspired by Chinese mythology confirmed.

Darn, now I am useless in predicting anything on upcoming fairy types due to my lack of knowledge in Chinese mythology...

Don'tcha love how Chinese cotton candy, elk and plague doctors are?

Seriously though, the rest of your theory is solid, well done, but the entire Fairy-type?

This is also why Sailor Moon's human name is Usagi (bunny) because she comes from the moon. The myth is pretty popular in Japanese folklore as well, though it's lost some of the Chinese history.

Perhaps Sylveon was inspired by the bunny on the moon myth, but the Fairy type as a whole is going to include many types of fairies, not just this one. And I think the tie to the moon goes well beyond that one particular myth.

Witchcraft rituals that are done late at night are not done at that time because of secrecy like many believe, but rather because they draw power from the moon when it is the highest in the sky and most visible. This is because the moon is said to be a great source of magical power.

There are many neopagan religions today that worship the moon or a moon Goddess.

A primary belief in Wicca is the polarity/balance between Goddess and God -- The Goddess is seen in the moon, and the God in the sun. Fairy creatures are considered part of the spiritual world, making them closer to the Goddess (moon).

The reason Allhallows/Samhain/Halloween/November Eve is seen as a sacred day in various religions is because it's associated with the beginnings of winter -- the beginning of the time when the moon is at its fullest power (nights are the longest during the winter). When the moon is in power, the world is more closely connected with the spiritual realm.

Those are just broad examples, but based on modern revival of European folklore, in which fairies are also very prominent.

The association with spiritual creatures and night/moon is big in all kinds of myth, folklore, religion, and tradition.
