I actually somewhat like it. If anything the design should probably look a bit stranger, although I can buy the "form your mind is comfortable with" argument pretty easily.
I'm not so sure the atheistic argument against it works either, since I'm rather strongly against religion and I don't have a problem with it. Considering that the Pokeverse seems to be a pretty nice place to live, and Arceus isn't rumored to have set up any horrible torments for those that disobey it, I think I'd take it over the gods of most of our actual religions. Arceus doesn't even seem to be emulating the Christian or Jewish idea of a god, since all they really share is that they're both the creators of the universe.
Cause it puts pay to all of Mew's hype, which was never even confirmed to start with. And its not as unpopular as you might think. Arceus won the big legendary DW poll in gen 5. So obviously a lot of people wanted him.
Also people need to stop spouting the catching-god-in-a-ball thing. In canon, Arceus and his dimension have never even been witnessed, let alone battled. His item was never released even in Japan, so he's untouchable. I like to think of his Events as him choosing to join your team. Since, yknow, you're the main character that surpasses the Champion and has a special connection to legends.
I like Arceus. Probably not my all-time favorite Pokemon, but I still like it. The idea of the Pokemon god being a llama in a wheel is actually pretty hilarious to me. Why? Because there are so many jokes to be made about llamas, especially considering that I grew up watching The Emperor's New Groove. Also, the only thing that Arceus and the Abrahamic God have in common is the fact that they created the world. There isn't really much else that they share, especially since Arceus takes more inspiration from Shinto myth than Christianity.
