So, is Team Flare supposed to be the Pokemon version of the Yakuza?

And Giovanni in HG/SS before you fight him in the Celibi event talks about how he will one day rule the world and that having a large organization with many followers is the key to that goal.

It doesn't matter. They were modeled after the Yakuza and their goals went from business/profit to include world domination because it's a game. In real life, most organized crime groups understand this is impossible, so they stick to the idea of territory and turf.

In Japan all the "Teams" are "Gang"s.

So technically, they are all organized criminals.

Team Rocket's goals just happened to be reasonable and not some insane attempt to alter the planet through domination of a legendary beast of lore.

Rcoket created Mewtwo, their "weapon" themselves, which I think is way more awesome then finding some legendary creature of myths, which has been the plot since Gen 3.

Team Rocket has nothing to do with Mewtwo, and they never created any Pokemon as a weapon. Mewtwo's existence is due to people wholly unassociated with Team Rocket/Giovanni. The anime is a different canon and continuity.

That plot only pertains to the anime version

^What he said; Game!Mewtwo was actually a legitimate birth from a pregnant Mew that was experimented on in the womb by the scientists, which included Blaine and Mr. Fuji.

And no, I did not just go to bulbapedia to look that up, what are you talking about? *whistles*

And yes, it means Mew is the only confirmed creature beyond humans in the pokemon universe that gives birth instead of laying eggs.

How were they modeled after the Yakuza if they look absolutely nothing like them?

Team Flare actually wear suits that Yakuza are known for wearing, they are red/orange sure but its still similar style clothing.

Is it ever confirmed humans don't lay eggs in the games?

Team Rocket members, in the first games, were all male, all thugs, and all proudly advertised that they're members of Team Rocket. Their more stereotypical factors were reduced outside of Japan and as the series moved on. They even had their own gambling ring thing going on with Game Corner.

All we know about Team Flare is that they wear suits and want money. We don't know what motives they have beyond this. They might just be a version of the (western) Mafia.

Many gangs out there will proudly wear their symbol or colour or whatever that represents them, thats not a unique aspect of the Yakuza. That could easily be attributed to many different gangs out there, the only reason people would link Team Rocket to the Yakuza at all is because this is a Japanese game. Team Flare on the other hand have the suits, AND the Sunglasses that Yakuzas are stereotypically known for, not to mention they wear their symbol on their belts its style is a lot more easily linked to Yakuzas than other the other Teams.

There's a difference between wearing your colors and making it clear that you belong to a gang. Members of Team Rocket are prone to announcing their affiliation, and even have buildings that carry the Rocket name. The Yakuza are groups where you can walk into a building and basically see a sign that says "Yakuza".

If anything, I'd chalk up the sunglasses to being a cultural thing - Japanese people made the games, so there's that little cultural touch.

Team Rocket doesn't have any buildings that openly announce who they are, all their bases are hidden behind fronts, like casinos, or stores that sell products.
And ALL of the Team's loudly announce who they work for, thats not a unique feature to Team Rocket.

Are you seriously telling me that you see this.

And there is no relation to this?

They even share the same facial expressions.
