Specializing in certain playstyles(Koga did it to an extent in gen2 and HGSS) would be better. That way, they still kind of specialize in stats(offensive playstyle has Attack and SpAtk with average speed, defensive playstyle has high HP and defenses, Trick Room has low speed, status spreader has high speed with average defenses), but aren't completely exploitable.

This is a great idea. For post-game challenges. The main game should stick to the type specializations, I think, because those are easier for newbies to get. I'd love to see more challenges in the post-game take different approaches, though, like focusing on strategies or focusing on stats or whatever else.
Isn't that what the temporary partner trainers did in Gen IV? Though I'd agree it'd be more of a battle frontier or PWT sort of challenge(I really hope X/Y has a large post game challenge and not just something like just the Battle Subway). --- "The fact of the matter is that we've been here constantly. We've been betraying peoples expectations, in a good way, for a long time."
It sounds like a good idea but I think the game is too set in it's ways to change like that. --- http://www.youtube.com/user/Shrooboid313?feature=mhee Please check out my YouTube channel. I do game walkthroughs.
