An interesting note on the latest leak (dual-type moves speculation)

What if dual-type moves simply picked the best type depending on the matchup?
Let's say Ice Burn becomes ice/fire. Against a dragon type it would count as an ice attack but against a steel type it would count as a fire attack.
Currently the prime candidates for dual type moves (Ice Burn, Freeze Shock, Geomancy and Oblivion Wing) are signature moves given to supposedly powerful ubers so it's not like they would be widespread enough to break the metagame.

the ONLY way dual-typed moves will work is this without making it broken.

Say you have a Water/Electric cannon of awesomeness attack.... its Power is 50/50, thus being a 100BP attack...

each element is 50BP.. if it's used against a type that's weak to one element, THAT element hits double.. and blah blah as usual....

So as mentioned this Water/Electric cannon of awesomeness attack hits a Ground/Rock type.. the Water element his 4x, but the Electric element is completely immune due to there being a Ground type on defending Pokemon...

so basically, it's like two attacks in one...

But yeah.. the idea is stupid, but that's about the only way it can be done...

Using imaginary numbers.

Scald: 100BP
Fire: 50 BP , 75 w/stab, 100 Se, 150 Se w/stab
Water: 50 BP 75 w/stab, 100 Se, 150 Se w/stab

100BP w/no stab, 125 w/1stab, 150 w/2stab, 150 w/1Se and no stab, 175 w/1Se and stab on the not Se element, 200 w/ 2Se, 225 w/ 1 Se and stab on Se, 250 w/ 1Se and stab on both, 300 if stab and Se on both elements.

Surf: 100BP w/no stab, 150 w/stab, 200w/Se, 300 stab+Se

Flamethrower:100BP w/no stab, 150 w/stab, 200w/Se, 300 stab+Se

As you can see, using this system would make scald outclassed by either move.

What if, taking that same example, you run into a negative attack?
Say you're about to use Surf/Flamethrower/Scald and the opponent switches to a pure Rock type. Assuming STABs all around:
-Surf would do 300 (=100 x2 x1.5)
-Flamethrower would do 75 (=100 x0.5 x1.5)
-Scald would do 187.5 (= [50 x2 x1.5] + [50 x0.5 x1.5])

Even assuming the STAB is only on the negative type (a Fire/non-Water using Scald), that's still 137.5 compared to what could have been 75 (or 300). It wouldn't be so much for the pure power in a closed setting with known outcomes, but one that offers more flexibility during swaps and coverage.

Let's say you have a Pokemon with 100BP Fire, 100BP Water, 100BP Electric, 100BP Grass moves and you run into a pure Dragon. In that case, instead of being stuck with attacks ranging from 50BP (non-STAB and not effective) to 75BP (STAB and not effective), wouldn't having an 125BP (assuming no STAB) Ice/Fire attack be better than your pure Fire attack?
