Its not like their balancing matters in terms of non-Nintendo tournaments anyways... and since when was Nintendo's tournaments balanced? It won't really make any difference in either case...

I'd like to think that they're just talking about patches that rebalance the game in some way, and not patches to fix any game-breaking bugs that happen to show up.

Why would people expect this to be a thing? Of course it's not going to have any post release "balance" support. Nintendo has always scoffed at the competitive scenes for their games anyway.

They patched Mario Kart 7 to fix an insane shortcut in one of the tracks. Just sayin'

No, because they are already in the game's coding, just inaccessible without an external source.
