I felt the games predecessors might be a fairer benchmark than GTA V. :D

The original Gen I games sold about 31 million copies.

Gen II: 23 million sales

Gen III - 16 million

Gen IV - 18 million

Gen V - 15 million

Gen V2: 7 million

Remakes and updated rereleases are not counted in this, but I felt that Black & White 2 were different enough to warrant a mention (although Platinum actually outsold them).

No real opinion on this myself, but I'm pretty sure it'll beat Gen V.

For some unknown reason I feel it might be able to touch the 20 mill mark, but idk how it will do when it's just released as the amount of people owning the 3DS still isn't comparable to the DS.

Well, I think that that it will be able to touch 20 mill by the end of it's lifespan.

I think it could do better then gens 3, 4 and 5.

Where are these numbers from? Would be interesting to get sales for each version (so separate for each version not combined) and also the remakes/3rd version etc. Do these numbers exist?

VGchartz, however it groups them according to content and release. For example, Black/White are listed together, as are Diamond/Pearl, but Platinum is listed separately.

Also, just some food for thought-the number of 3ds' sold is apparently around 34 million.

Ok thanks.

I imagine that most pokemon fans will have/will get a 3ds some time, so I can't see the number of units sold being too much of a problem. I can see this Christmas being a big time for 3DS and pokemon sales, so even if launch isn't huge, over the next year or so the numbers could steadily rise.

They tend to be decent at giving you a rough idea though.
