Since Pokemon is a jRPG, I see no reason why we may not see this in the future.
Talking about this now....For example, Pokemon can learn skills that make the pokemon regenerate health, or PP if the Pokemon used a 'not very effective' move, or a skill that makes the pokemon dodge/block/take no damage from the first move. (for example)
Pokemon can Learn multiple skills, and depending on how weak or strong the pokemon is, he may be able to learn more or less skills than normal.
This can also be seen as an excuse to having double items held, or the pokemon having double abilities.

I always wish moves were equippable. You'd be able to have access to every move the pokemon learned but only "equip" 4 at a time, and only outside of battle --- Pokemon Black FC: 4470 0364 4689 "Have you actually seen the scene in question? It needs some crackers to go with its cheese." - Poppadop

It seems interesting but it would have to be done right.(Though that can be said about a lot of things.)
