Did GTA5 just steal the thunder of Pokemon X/Y?

I wonder how GTA V will do in Japan. I still think that people would still get Pokemon although I seriously hope that GTA doesn't affect Pokemon's sales considerably.

It's one of the most anticipated games last I heard.

Here's an old link. Can't seem to find a more recent one.

It's getting a fair amount of hype here. Not as heavily advertised as Monster Hunter 4, but still enough to see the interest.

Just to give you an idea of how messed up the age rating system is, consider that Persona 4 and GTAV are both M-rated games.
Should I not let a 10-year old child play Persona 4 because of that rating? By extension, why shouldn't the same kid play GTA V?

Also, just because GTAV is being "highly anticipated" in Japan it doesn't mean it'll sell well. GTA IV's sales were absolutely pathetic there as you can see here: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/7102/grand-theft-auto-iv/Japan/
And that's the PS3 version, the most popular plataform in Japan. The Xbox version barely sold 40k copies and the PC version is non-existant there.

So what makes you believe that GTAV V will sell more than ~200k copies in Japan this time?

I wouldn't use VGchartz as proof for anything to be frank... Also, it topped out the sales chart the week it was released.

Very few games actually break 1mil sales in Japan, IIRC. 200K is quite a bit in Japan.

Yeah selling 160k copies in a week with no competition whatsoever in a country where its native games easily sell 2m+ on the first day.
I would hardly call that an accomplishment.

If it's on a handheld, sure. But you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a console release with those kinds of sales in Japan. Outside of Big names Like Final Fantasy and Dragon's Quest, most Console games don't break 1 million sales in one day or even week one. Looking at that list, the top console games got around 400K week one. Japan is not exactly a console gaming country. It is predominantly handheld. As such Yes, Pokemon will beat out GTA that week in Japan based on that fact alone.

GTA is just not exactly unpopular in japan

You know that VGChartz isn't exactly reliable?

I can't imagine having a 5-7 year old kid cursing at the tv screen while he is doing a drive-by and getting chase by cops.

It's GTA, it steals everything's thunder, and with good reason.

Fail to see why. Its a fantastic series, yeah, but lets just be honest: it was a niche little series until it became "controversial" and all the edgy people flocked to it

I agree. It's the shame that until a couple days ago Nintendo's execution for X/Y worldwide release date had been flawless. Now suddenly a game of some random dude running around killing everything just derailed all the work that Nintendo has done in the last year.

HEY HEY HEY Three random dudes.
Don't make me go Trevor on your ass!!!

More like 1 random and 2 Veteran.

And let's be honest, unless you make them do it yourself, only Trevor ''kills Everything''

The mission where he kills Johnny from TLAD was hilarious
