I got a physical copy of Y, but it says I need a SD card to play?

It says something like "the SD card couldn't be recognized, please end the game and start again" but why do I even need one? This happened on two different 3DSes and two different copies of the game, and I have no idea why.

how do you have 2 3ds's and no SD card? they both would have come with one

Well is there an SD card in the SD card slot? Or is it full or something? The games aren't like the DS carts, they need external memory due to the fact that there's more information on the cart itself.

All the 3DS games I've used have required external memory. I'm not sure of any that don't.
