I know its a fire type and right now I do not have a fire type.

I have the water starter.. so..

is it a pretty good pokemon?

Approximately base 80 in both offenses. It's got great Speed, though, so if you can make those offenses work for you, it's not bad.

I liked it, but in the end I went with the speed boost Torchic as my Fire type.

Staraptor is better, but talonflame can attack from both sides, and give you fire coverage if you need it. It's not bad by any means and is perfectly useable.
