Explain the appeal of entry hazards to me

#1HappyUnicorn101Posted 11/11/2013 12:19:12 AM
I don't really understand why they are such a big part of competitive pokemon. I don't play compettiively so please educate me.

I can see why Toxic spikes is great, provided it works like toxic where the poison gets worse each turn.

But what is so great about Spikes and Stealth rock? I know stealth rock does like half damage on things it is super effective to but from what I have seen spikes and stealth rock do so little damage most of the time.

So what is the appeal? Do you need to fight for every point of damage in competitive pokemon? Is it to prevent things like "Sturdy"?

And don't mistake this thread as one that says "Why are you using THAT?" I am honestly asking a genuine question.

It discourages switching, which can lead to you actually hitting the Pokémon you want.

Also, if you JUST MISS that tiny little health on a Pokémon to KO it, he's basically dead if your oponent tries to switch him out.

In competitive pokemon, you're switching half of the time. That means that roughly every mother move, Stealh Rocks and spikes will inflict damage on the opponent.

Also, when going for a sweep, stealth rocks is enough to take some 2HKOs and make them OHKOs.

To dissuade people from switching too often, cause people will switch out if they're in a tight spot, etc and entry hazards will punish them for it.

Spikes and Stealth Rock do break Sturdy and Focus Sashes, yes, but they can also do a lot of damage to Pokemon, as you mentioned. Stealth Rock does a ton of damage to certain Pokemon, and Spikes can do up to 25% damage to those that get hit by it.

This residual damage means that you can possible OHKO certain Pokemon instead of 2HKO, which means that you may have a much easier time dealing with some of them.

Stealth rock deals damage based on the opponents weakness: talonflame, which seems to be very popular, will suffer from 50% damage with just one stealth rock. Which is one of the reasons Moltres was never popular.

Besides taking out flying, ice, and bug types for 25% health it also breaks focus sash and sturdy.
