How different is Smogon from Nintendo tournament rules?

They seem so similar that its pointless for two communities to be upheld for rules to exist.

They aren't similar at all....VGC rules are 4v4 doubles with all legendaries being banned, item clause, and thats it. The standard smogon metagame is 6v6 singles with evasion and over centralizing pokemon in singles being banned

They're not similar at all. Nintendo tournaments just ban what's overpowered on paper (high bst legends), while smogon tries to make their rules adapt to the metagame.

Smogon sounds better when you put it that way. They actually seem to take care of the rules even if some of their decisions seem unfair.

Yet they made tiers which actually makes people over centralize Pokemon.

Smogon's metagame focuses on Single Battle format, and they tend to put emphasis on "tiers". All Pokemon have a tier rating, and you cannot use a Pokemon in a tier lower than what they're rated in. This means that, say, Garchomp can be in the highest tiers, and the Pokemon with lower stats can be safe in the lower tiers, since they'll only fight Pokemon of relative strength.

Nintendo's official rules focus on Double Battle format, and they put more of a blanket ban on cover legendaries and event Pokemon. They also ban Dark Void and Sky Drop, due to the former being OP in the format and the latter being glitchy.

Smogon adds a lot of pointless bans and clauses, as well as needlessly assigning tiers to Pokemon. Smogon 'rules' destroys the fun of the game, and leaves many players predictable.

Nintendo/Game Freak's official VGC rules are more open, the only Pokemon banned are ones that are event only or truly OP as far as the game mechanics. Moves only get banned if they are glitched. The only known item ban is Soul Dew as it makes Lati@s a bit OP.

Though individual tournament operators can add their own rules to the base VGC set, they are usually minor additions unlike the overkill Smogon 'rules'.

FYI smogon doesn't apply online, so keep that in mind before you go online, get trashed by some blazikens or whatever else people whine about, then come here and go "what the hell?!"
