Why exactly would copying your save onto an SD card not allow you to clone?

#1-Unowninator-Posted 12/28/2013 11:10:50 PM
I had an idea to clone Pokemon on a digital copy, but someone else told me it wouldn't work & I forgot the reason why (it was within the 1st week the game came out).

1. Copy the save data from your SD card onto your computer or another card (without erasing it).

2. Trade a Pokemon off the SD card.

3. Restore the old data.

How would this fail exactly?

I think it's because you can't restore the old data. It just won't work that way.

I think it is because pokemon data is cartridge lock. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

It worked with other games before they added backup saves via System Update.

I meant the download version, not the cartridge version.

It has something to do with a key on the system. If you copy the data onto a computer, and play the game, the key on the game changes. When you try and restore what's on the computer, they don't match, so it wont' work.

From what I've seen in the research forums across the net, it is because the system generates a new random key to match each save and the NAND at the time of the save.

In order to clone the save, you would have to clone the system NAND at the exact time of the save. Then you would have to flash the NAND (which at this time requires a hard mod) so that the game would recognize the previous save and not kick it out as being corrupt.

Pokemon and Animal Crossing both use NAND based saving methods to cut down on cloning. There are groups working on ways around this, but nothing has been released.

The saved game file is encrypted in a way that once opened the saved game automatically becomes corrupt. Thus preventing you or anyone else from inserting anything into it unless it's done by the 3DS system itself. Hackers have been trying but no luck there.

Saves are tied to the systems internal memory. When you load a save the game checks to see if it is the most recently created save. If it's not, the game simply won't load it.
