It had its downfalls, but every game back then had these mishaps. But the concept, the gameplay and music were amazing for a handheld. It started a whole new generation of RPGs. No longer did you have to be confined to one character with one skill set, now you could have six skill sets to handle the challenge.
Today, the glitches of Gen 1 are what people remember most, yet many glitches still exist today, many of them game breaking, or at least breaks very important parts. The graphics dont hold up either. We have 3D and such, where the GameBoy had flat 2D pixels. The gameplay has problems as well. I mean, just look at the crit and evasion system. The fact a lv 20 could KO a lv 50 is a joke. It can still happen today of course but its far harder than in Red/Blue/Yellow.
Lets not forget that most myths and creepypastas are based on Gen 1. Are there any based in Gen 3 though Gen 6? If there are, they arent popular and mainstream enough to be known by many people compared to White Hand, Lavendar Towns Music, Garys Raticate and such. Many of these are silly and dont have any truth but still, some give a good laugh.
Overall, if a Red/Blue/Yellow remake happened with updated graphics and didnt do any fancy nonsense, like Leaf Green/Fire Red, and stick to the original 151, stick to native Kanto and polished everything (Like remove the glitches, use the current Battle system, ect), I'd gladly buy and play it.
