"chu" is onomatopoeia for a mouse's squeak. "pika pika" is crackling electricity.

I thought pikapika was more of sparkling light in general, hence why translating Pikachu's name could have been easily done as Sparklesqueak (character limit aside)

I guess you're right... but I've never heard of this "Sparklesqueak" before.
