because we needed a pokemon that can learn surf and we needed either Lapras or Vaporeon otherwise we'd need to deposit a guy in the PC... well we got Flareon and when we went to the PC to deposit.... we lost ABBBBBBBK and Jay Leno.
Why is Flareon called the False Prophet? It seems like they blame Flareon for releasing Charmeleon (Abby) and Rattata (Jay Leno.)
Getting Flareon was a disaster all around. They were in Celadon City with only five Pokemon in the party, and a bunch of people wanted to get Eevee. Others warned against it, because they would eventually need a Pokemon that could learn Surf to progress through the game. Sure, Vaporeon can Surf, but what were the odds that they could successfully buy a Water Stone with what little money they had and then use it on Eevee before evolving it into something else or running out of money?
Ultimately they got an Eevee and decided to take the chance...and got Flareon. This meant that, now, they'd have to deposit a Pokemon if they wanted to get Lapras (or any other Pokemon who could learn Surf.) So, they went to the PC...and ultimately ended up releasing Abby and Jay Leno. For a time, they also deposited Pidgeot (their strongest Pokemon by far) and the Helix Fossil (something of a mascot of Twitch Plays Pokemon.)
They managed to get Pidgeot and the Helix Fossil back out, but Flareon ended up released, meaning that there was absolutely no gain from getting Eevee at all. They lost two of their Pokemon (one of whom--Abby, as a Charmeleon--was decently leveled with a moveset that wasn't absolutely terrible), most of their money, and still managed to lose the Eevee. Now they're left with only Pidgeot as a competent Pokemon...and Pidgeot can't hit ghosts.
So, the meme that Eevee is the false prophet, sent to lead the players astray and to their doom, was born.
I have serious doubts you're laughing out loud as much as you claim.
