So I saw this posted on neogaf.

I imagine that Nintendo had contracts in place that made sure they couldn't shut down service until the contract had completed. My guess would be that Glu Mobile wanted to stop supporting Nintendo ASAP. I really doubt Nintendo would electively shut down service for Wii and DS unless they really had to.

Not sure if this has been mentioned here but I saw it on Reddit.

Didn't double check it because I'm lazy but this would be a pretty legitimate excuse if true.

I decided to double check it and it turns out to be true.

http://docs.poweredbygamespy.com/wiki/How_does_GameSpy_support_the_Nintendo_Wii_%26_DS%3F

GameSpy is the default multiplayer middleware and backend services provider for both the Wii and DS platforms. Nintendo have provided standardized online multiplayer functionality the form of the 'DWC' wrapper class around our SDKs. Access to the DWC is available through your Nintendo account rep and comes at no extra licensing charge to you.

Upon request from Nintendo, GameSpy will set up title specific access to our backend and Nintendo will manage all support for DWC issues to licensees via support@noa.com.

Developers and publishers can still license additional SDKs not incorporated into the DWC directly from GameSpy. Typically, this would be our Sake and ATLAS SDKs for advanced persistent storage and stats tracking/leaderboard functionality. Basic ranking functionality is offered through the DWC already; contact your account manager for details on that functionality.

And with the recent sale of gamespy to GLU moble, online services using gamespy have been getting shut down.

Seeing as how most Wii and DS games can't be patched, this can't be fixed.

There is no way for Nintendo to rig up something to copy Gamespy's servers?

Also does this mean Borderlands 1 no longer has multiplayer, or is it unaffected.

That or Nintendo wants to force people onto 3DS and Wii U.

Also if this is true, Nintendo could just buy it.

If the users can, Nintendo should be able to. It makes me wonder though, what's really being disconnected, the service itself, or the method to connect? That is, are services like GTS being discontinued, or just the middleware that makes the connection possible? If it's the latter, I don't see why Nintendo couldn't make their own server.

I should also point out that it's not impossible to patch DS games, just incredibly difficult and tedious. It was done with Ruby and Sapphire, through the Berry Patch program. So even if Nintendo managed to set up their own service, would they put in the effort to patch the game cards? Probably not.

Nintendo CEO; I got a idea to rig our sales up on the wii u and 3ds. Let's get rid of the online support then people will feel the need to buy our new systems for online play with their friends.
Minion: but pokemon black and white 2 are not that old what about them?
CEO: those games are old it's all about pokemon x and y now. And we will annocene soon so they will also buy a 3ds with the new z game. Bringing in more profit!!!!
Minions: seem legit
