Well, how can Head Smash be rock type when Aegislash uses it?

"Head" Smash on a sword-and-shield didn't make any sense either.

When I first knew he learned the move, I though he somehow hit his opponent with the handle of the sword. Though why would the handle do more damage than the blade is a mystery.

Pokemon has its own set of physics/rules of reality. I bet Game Freak lacks even a decent explanation on how the physics/rules in the Pokemon world works, which is pretty obvious from the Pokedex entrees.
