If you want to go by all forms of Pokemon media, then only actual attacks really have much of an effect. Fire types, for example, might not love water, but they can still swim, and need to drink to live, like any other animal.

That makes as much sense as Garchomp dying just by existing since the Dragon type is weak to itself.
