PSA: Coins are NOT added to your tally the second you grab them.

Yeah it's true. I tested a 4 player coin grind in a race. I only got one unlock out of it, and that was at 150 coins. I should have had way more than that if every coin counted.

I have unlocked a new vehicle part after completing every Grand Prix, which requires 50 Coins. You can only hold 10 Coins at a time during a race. So 10 Coins x 4 races = 40 Coins. But like I said, I still unlocked a new vehicle part every GP, so that must mean that you can collect more than 10 Coins toward your overall count.

I'll copy a post from Meatballsoup in another thread...

It is entirely possible to get four rewards in a row from offline Grand Prix.

Have: 299. No reward.
Get 40 coins: get 300 coin reward, now have 339.
Get 40 coins: get 350 reward, now have 376.
Get 40 coins: get 400 reward, now have 419
Get 40 coins: get 450 reward, now have 459

4 rewards in a now. The next 40 leaves you at 499.

40 coins a pop with 50 coin milestones means you hit a milestone 4/5ths of the time.

I have never went through a Grand Prix either without unlocking a part, many times while finishing the race with 6 or 7 coins (getting hit right before the finish) and sometimes even only 3 coins. If I finished every single race with max coins I'd only have 40 like you said... so how am I getting 50 while finishing with 2 or 3 coins?!? I 100%ed Mario Kart 7 and THAT game you could only get 40 coins per Grand Prix, because I never ONCE unlocked two parts in a row playing Grand Prix (because it would be impossible). So MK8 MUST have some mechanic allowing you to collect more coins...

yep coins only get added to the total after you finish the race and the max in 1 race you can get is 10. if you have friends playing they can also get max 10. so 4 players in 1 race will net you 40 coins. you have to finish the race, if you quit/restart you get nothing.

I played a few hours with friends Friday night and Sunday night, I have around 1800 coins at the moment. If you have been collecting a lot, especially with friends, go into any mode and make selections up to the part screen. After you get your unlock, back out to the mode select screen, and repeat. The game only unlocks something, regardless of how many coins you have, when you reach the parts select screen. For most people, that is one every time you start up grand prix or online. Doing it that way, you will get very back logged on parts.

It's really hard to answer because we can't see our coin tallies, but we've all tried grinding for coins in a variety of modes and are not getting anymore than 10 per player per race, so unless you can record a playthrough of GPs to show yourself unlocking coins, I got nothing for you. But refer to Meatballsoup's quote above, because it's very much possible to unlock parts after sequential GPs if your coin tally stands at a certain spot when you start. You're not starting every race with a perfect 100 coins or whatever.

Also, what LordElohim just said that no one seems to realize. You only get one part notification at a time, so it's very possible to stack them and not even realize it. If you unlock a part, you will NEVER receive another notification until you go to the part select screen and find out what you unlocked. At that point, you have to then go to one of many screens that notifies you of part unlocks before you can see the next one. (Finishing a GP is one such screen. The main menu is another.)

I played for several hours online, went to the main menu, got a notification of a part. Went to the part select screen, found out what it was, backed out to the main menu, and got another notification immediately. I repeated this for about 5 notifications.

So, it's very possible you are unlocking multiple parts, but because you're not getting all of the notifications at once, you think you're earning enough coins every GP to unlock another.

So what's the fastest way to farm coins?

Have friends.

Seriously... Play local multiplayer with three other people, and you're basically giving your coin accruement a 4x multiplier.

Otherwise, Time Trial is a good way. There are no other racers or items, so there's nothing to slow you down or cause you to drop coins (assuming you don't fall off course and what-not). Plus, the mode is designed to finish races as fast as possible.

If you haven't already, work on defeating the Staff Ghosts. At 32 courses with 10 coins each, that's 320 coins by the time you're done, assuming you can even defeat each ghost on your first try.

I have only played GP and I get a new part after every cup. So that already disproves TC's claims since that would mean I can only get 40 per cup.

OR. You can read every other post on this thread that has already addressed this misconception.
