PSA: Coins are NOT added to your tally the second you grab them.

I got an unlock for 300 coins and the very next race got an unlock for 300 coins...again. That would indicate to me that I crossed over 250 into 300 at some point during the first race and then unlocked again only after finishing the next race. By race I mean circuit.

TC you are wrong about not being able to get more than 40 per grand prix, i KNOW you can get more than 40 because I unlocked parts during EVERY SINGLE cup up till parts started becoming more than 50 coins apart.

Seriously. Read the rest of the thread. There are possible explanations for this, and I truly believe it is a misconception players are having.

I think the mechanic works like this:

If you have 10 coins any coin you gain aftewards goes directly into a "wallet" or "bank". If you have less than 10 coins it goes to your coin count for that race as normal. Thus when you get hit at 10 coins the coins you gain aftewards do not go to the wallet/bank, but rather your normal coin count.

Then any coins you have in your coin count at the end of the race are added to the bank.

For example, say you are doing a race and collect 10 coins. Then you collect 3 more coins while you coin count is full. This puts 3 in the bank. The race then ends and you get 10 more coins in the bank, making your profit 13 coins for that race.

In this way any coins you lose from being hit are infact lost. The only coins that are safe are ones you collected while already at 10 coins.

This wouldn't work with the grinding experiments I've tried. I camped racers on coins and just sat there as the coins respawned on them. Coins respawn in 2 seconds, and I had two racers sitting on them. In 5 minutes, I would have earned about 300 coins. Yet, no parts were unlocked after the race.

I thought the Golden Glider took 10K to unlock, not 20K.

Either way, thank you for confirming. This weekend we collected 4K coins simply from playing multiplayer for hours upon hours. I have no doubt that we'll unlock the gold glider in no time just from normal play.

I heard 10k ALSO

It is 10,000, yes. That was my fault.

That just means you might not be able to collect the same coin twice or more in a row. It does not mean you are not getting to bank coins. While I have not received a new part after every circuit, I have also not really tried to gather coins each time. This has made me want to go straight home and start a new file so I can try all these things!

I don't know what it is with you guys and your poor choice of words.

offline local, 4 players, if each finish a race with 10 coins each, I'll have 40 coins for my trouble?

Yes, if the tests have been accurate.
It's possible there's a hidden variable that wasn't tested correctly though, but in all likelihood, it's 10 coins per local player per race tops.

Yes, and I'm not sure how it was a "poor choice of words" when I explained this in the OP.

When playing local multiplayer, the coins count for each player, so if you have friends, you can basically add a 4x multiplier to your coin-collecting needs.

This is definitely wrong. My first cup in GP unlocked me the 50 coin part. 4 x 10 = 40.

They are added as you collect, not when you finish the race.

Sorry, TC, school and homework got in the way and just saw your post. I'll get right on that. I do not have a recording device, sorry, unless the Wii U has something built in.

From what I have tested:
You start with zero coins.
Coins are not immediately banked.
Coins cannot be stacked past 10 coins.
There is no bonus for completing a cup.
There is no bonus for your first cup.
If you quit mid race, all coins collected in that race will be gone.
If you quit mid Grand Prix, the coins will only be kept for the completed courses.

If you say you got a kart part after the first Grand Prix, you are mistaken. Whether it was a rage quit, time trial, playing with a friend, or an online match you had already collected 10+ coins.

I did a 100cc Grand Prix on a brand new file, collected more than 10 coins per race and got a 3 star ranking. I then collected 5 coins on a Time Trial, then 3, then 2, and after the last 2 coins I got the part.

Thank you, Pinxed!! I'm glad to see some that others are willing to experiment with the coin system instead of just vaguely recalling an experience and declaring a conclusion based on that. =)

So... It basically works the same way as Mario Kart 7, it seems.

As my own update... My local GameStop didn't have the MK8 Prima guide in stock, but I'll keep looking. The photos of the guide that I found online are extremely in-depth with the gameplay mechanics, so if there's some elaborate coin system, I'm confident it will address it. Otherwise, I think it's safe to assume that the coins work the same as they did in MK7.

And really... If everyone would just stop and crunch some numbers for a second, they'd realize how ridiculous it would be if you banked coins instantly.

Even if you don't consciously try to pick up "extra" coins on a race, most coins are in line with the path you take during the course, so grabbing them accidentally while drifting and what-not is pretty typical. And if you're leading most races, you're going to get inundated with the coin item. I can easily grab about 50 coins a race, yet I'm not unlocking multiple parts per GP. If I was banking them instantly, I would have the Gold Glider already. Instead, I'm only at the 1,800 coin unlock.
