How about Piranha Plant as a newcomer?

Since it would be in a kart, it wouldn't need to move, and could use leaves to steer. I would actually love this, and main him if it happened. I don't think Piranha Plant has been playable in anything before...

Eh, I'm fine with a regular Piranha Plant, but I rather have Petey come back.

There have been walking Piranha Plants before (Mario Party 3 battle partners spring to mind), so it's possible for them to be playable anywhere. I'd use it.
