Can Mario learn from other Platformers?

Obviously Mario stands tall over the genre in a number of respects, but could it take some ideas from other platformer games while still feeling like a Mario game?

Besides anything concerning story, one area I feel Mario has been lacking is in flight mechanics. SM64 and the feather cap was incredibly stiff, SMG and the red star only had one mission and SMG2 with the bird was glorified gliding. As a kid I played the Spyro trilogy prior to SM64, so responsive flight were seen as a must by me. It would be a perfect place for Tanooki/Cape Feather nostalgia as well as offer a change from pure platforming. If we had open 64-style levels, it would be good for exploration and discovering hidden areas in the level.

I'd like to see Mario's worlds and levels have more personality like the Donkey Kong Country games.
And the boss style from DKC would be a step up from the "three-hit-KO" and "attack when he's out of the shell" trope that Nintendo too often uses.

I'd like to see Mario go back to using punches and kicks. They helped keep the flow going in Rayman Origins.

They need to up the level for Mario games.

Screw the little kiddies. They complain too much anyways.

Man up and learn to play or cheat with Luigi.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is probably the hardest Mario game, if you can beat that, than future Mario games is a piece of burrito!

How can you say that when Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels exists?

Anyway, the swimming controls in all 2D platforming Mario games are pure ****. Please look at Kirby or Rayman Origins for better swimming controls. Especially Rayman Origins.

Well, SMB3 is the longest Mario platformer game without a save feature, excluding the arcade ones like Mario Bros., Clash and...does Hotel Mario have a save feature?

Speaking of that, there is something else Mario could try to bring back. To me, there is a charm to single screen arcade platformers, but the original Mario Bros. suffered from poor controls and a lack of variety. With the Advance titles, we saw what it could look like with smooth controls, so mix that with a Cloudberry Kingdom style level generator with difficulty adjustment and you have a real time waster. If they come out with a sequel to 3D Land I would love to have this feature on the go in place of those Mystery Cubes or whatever they're called.
