Why is the xeno fanbase so tiny?

7) XBC, even carrying the Xeno name, after renaming it Xenoblade from Monado, is not tied directly to Gears or Saga. Even though it's spurred more interest, and has a larger western fanbase, it isn't like Blade has spurred a huge revival of Gears or Saga. There's clearly MORE interest, but the question also remains: how many of XBC's players haven't played any of Gears or Saga? It's not THAT much more popular, and it's less likely people paying attention to XBC during the whole OpRainfall push, but who never bought the game would look into either Gear or Saga.

All three combined

1) The only one really: humans are creatures of habit. Often we have limited time, and very carefully crafted comfort zones. With only X to spend, it's more likely for people to look for and search for what they already know. Even if they're insanely bored with the type/style/look/feel/whatever, it still provides a level of comfort something new cannot. Though there are many with a pioneering spirit, the question is whether they play games, whether they would even be looking for any particular item. It's why commercialism is so successful. It's both a way to keep people comfortable with the products they already know, but with so much repetition and proper sales pitches, a new thing can seem more desirable.

My two cents, but I guess the best way to sum up the last point I made: There's a lot out there, and I doubt very much even 1% of the entire world population has spent more than 10seconds looking or considering Xenoblade, Xenogears, or any of the Xenosaga releases. Even if they would, how many would care or want to play even knowing they would enjoy it? How many have time?

Too many reasons why, but too many possibilities for this to change in the future. So we'll have to see what tomorrow brings.

Well said. As an FFVII fan your signature irks me but I can't hold that against the message body content.

Alternative theory: we don't drink enough milk.

I am an FF 7 fan as well, though I don't hold it in nearly as high esteem as others. It's more making sport of many of those FF7 fanboys that started out with the game but can't seem to find any solace or similar sensation of awesomeness with any RPG's since, especially FF releases after 7. Perhaps it's cruel, and in that sense my apologies as it isn't meant to slight, but more to poke fun. I was thinking about Plato's man in the cage when I came up with the sig.

Damn, I think you're right. It must be all that Soy. It's makin' the brain soft, mushy, less able to retain memories and think past the next 5 seconds.

If I hadn't already planned on telling you "it's all good man, I was just messing around" prior to your Plato reference, I sure as hell will now. Classy. :P

All the releases have been relatively low key with maybe the exception of Xenosaga Ep.1 and the staff has gone through a couple publishers at this point making it hard to create anything but a meta-series due to IP rights. You also have to consider that outside of Final Fantasy, JRPGs have always been pretty niche, at least here in the U.S.

There are many reasons, JRPG's are no longer looked at the way they were back on psx (and for good reason, they mostly went to poo REALLY fast thanks to squeenix), even as a jrpg, the xeno series is often to in depth for many, or the case with saga, way too much verbose melodrama...

But Im going to put out a reason that I dont think many have thought about.

Almost all entries in the Xeno franchises actually had rather limited releases. In fact, if you had a copy of xenogears you could probably easily fetch 60 bucks for it today, and if it was sealed, Hundreds. The greatest hits re release was a little more prominent, but even so, after it was released, it pretty much dissapeared because the majority of people who bought didnt sell it back.

Xenosaga is the exception... It was still pretty low key, but considerably more available, wide enough available, and people resold it a lot, it was pretty.... dissapointing, even at its best it never held a candle to gears, and after its worse, a lot of people gave up on it (episode 2).... so its not really worth anything today. You can fetch maybe 18-20 bucks for a sealed copy of about any entry on ebay. It does however, have a bit of a cult following, its merchandise like dolls and stuff sell rather often and for rather much, likely to tittilate the people who happened to play the game at that specific point in their lives where seeing computer boobs burst out of their... holding... strap... things left a permanent mark on them, in the form of a tingling in their pants.

Xenoblade, is another very limited release, so limited, that only one store chain in the entire us actually sold them. Well, after a sluggish start word of mouth and youtube videos spread the tale of a game entirely uncommon in todays world of homogenized factory line garbage gaming, and it then quickly dissapeared, and almost nobody resold it. The game was going for upwards of 300 bucks on ebay.

A year or so later, gamespot 'found' another shipment, and price gouged the hell out of them, selling them for 90 bucks a pop, and after much backlash, 75. SInce gamespot opened these games so they could pretend they were used, and thus sell them according to their own supply and demand instead of msrp, none of the second batch of Xenoblade counted towards its LTD. So although it only shows .84 million units, its probably sitting at about 1 million sold (and 3 million pirated...)

So, far a 'series' of... 'unrelated but sorta related series;' that despite having been around so long, has had such limited exposure that it has been kept out of the hands of many many would be players.

I think if a tingling in your pants is permanent, you should go see a doctor...

Because the Xeno series is niche, and there hasent been a real Xeno game since 2006 so people have moved on, Xenoblade was only moderatly successful selling only 800k copies and didnt have anything to do with the Xeno universe, only "X" looks to be in the settings of xenogears/xenosaga much more than Xenoblade ever was, now its like expecting a bunch of people from 1998-2006 to come back out of nowhere and make a huge cult following is just unrealistic, if FF cant even keep a large playerbase with such a huge name anymore what chance does a old series like Xeno have

All i hope is the game is good, mainstreaming games have really done nothing but hurt games, and forced developers to make there games too accessible to a wider audience and diverge from their real vision for the game

^Smack, all the Xeno games sell around a million copies worldwide. Are you forgetting or did you not know that Xenoblade was sold out for months? Gamestop doesn't even sell new copies anymore, so any of their copies supposedly don't count.

Also, VGChartz.
