So why do people on this board hate Persona?

Hate is a strong word, but for me personally it's like this: P1 and P2 seem to have pretty interesting stories, but the gameplay is so dag blasted frustrating that I can't bring myself to succumb to that torture ever again. Even watching someone play this game is boring in my eyes. The remake had a chance to redeem itself, but it practically changes nothing annoyingly enough. P3 is where the game becomes a mixed bag for me. I do like the idea of a Sim/RPG, but the game has a lot of gameplay problems here too. Social links that are lined up with one another, so if you don't progress certain ones, you can find yourself unable to do other ones (like if you don't do Hierophant, you'll never get Temperance I believe with the boy Bebe). And that's not all, the game becomes a literal guessing game during S.Links, where you have to guess what the character you are hanging out with wants to hear. It's pretty atrocious. What's even more annoying, is that P4 doesn't even really fix this problem. All it does is make it easier to increase the rank (which fixes the problem of the choices even mattering as much, but it doesn't fix the decision making problem itself.) The battling aspects are pretty terrible. It's like the press turn system light... It takes some of the worst aspects and slaps them into the system, and it just doesn't quite work. Characters are stuck at certain elements, so your team can either be relatively useless for some battles (like in P3, there were battles where you were better off NOT having a party member present than trying to fight with him/her), or you'll have to grind someone else to catch up (fortunately, this isn't too bad because EXP gets modified based on their level. So all you need to do is keep the weakling alive.) Also, P3 and P4 could have done some more playtesting. The HP values are bad. The average character is KOed in 1-3 hits, pretty much universally, assuming you traveled to the right places at the right time... I don't hate persona, but I prefer other installments in the series of games that have been cranked out. There's also the fact that the fanbase for Persona is absolutely ridiculous. --- Jimbo. | |

Just for the record if it wasn't for P3 I wouldn't even know what SMT was. Since it introduced me to the series naturally I give it a special place in my gaming library. Am i the only one that would actually like to see characters from Persona,Devil summoner,Devil survivor, and Digital devil saga? In all seriousness i dont understand the animosity towards Persona on these boards.Yea Persona fanboys(mainly P4 ones) are annoying not gonna lie,but if anything the Megaten fans constantly whining and complaining about Persona and how irritating the Persona fanboys/girls are are just as annoying. And to those saying that Persona is no longer apart of the Megaten series, the Shin megami tensei name was only ommited from Persona 4:Golden(an enhanced port of the original), and Persona 4:Arena, a fighting game sequel. The original Persona 4 still retained the Shin megami tensei name in its title. Unless the next several Persona games ommit the name as well as Atlus officially announcing it as its own franchise, Persona is still just as much apart of The Shin Megami Tensei series. Also to those saying they would be out of place in the cast, well crossovers arent supposed to make sense in the first place, so they could work. Also pairing FE with SMT is already an oddball pairing so the others wouldnt be too out of place. With that said, so far there is only one teaser trailer released, so chances are there are many characters yet to be shown from both SMT and FE, though whether they are from Persona, Devil Summoner etc is still up in the air. If a game doesnt have the SMT tittle in Japan then its not a SMT game (Its only for marketing porpuses in america after Nocturne success), even DemiKids is more mainline and would make more sense than Persona. I want a huge SMT universe game with all the games characters but i want that as a SMT only game not with other games. Is it that bad for Persona to be excluded from one game? YES YOU ARE! I like Persona(except 3), but I prefer the main series since they're more epic in terms of story. Persona shouldn't be in this because they've been getting so much attention. This crossover has the potential to bring the main series the attention it deserves. It should be getting more attention than Persona because it paved the way for Persona and every other spin-off. I'd like to see Naoya appear as a Devil Survivor rep though.
