The tutorial stage was so long I got bored and couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

...the what?

Do you mean Spiral Mountain?

You can completely skip that.
I the first level. I don't remember what it was called.
I didn't know you could skip it either. The game didn't really make it obvious.

Yes, it most certainly does.

I'd love to see an open world collect-a-thon type platformer but I doubt it will ever happen.

Honestly I beat the game 100% three times and when I watched someone skip it recently I was surprised. Don't ask me how I missed something so obvious as well.

Oh. Well I probably chose not to skip it at first because I've never played it before that. After I got to that spiral hill bridge thing I decided to quit.

Does the game only allow one chance to skip the level?

...the top of Spiral Mountain is the end of the tutorial.

I mean, I really, really hated how 64 and Sunshine kicked you out of the level just to make you enter it... again. That completely ruins the so called "open world" experience of the game that it was trying to deliver. 64 was the first 3D Mario adventure, so that was forgivable. By Sunshine, the developers knew what worked and what didn't, so that game has no excuse to be doing the same thing all over again.

Both Galaxies also kicked you out of their levels when you collected a Power Star. So I don't see what the complaint is about.

But it's only really a problem in 64, as nearly every star is obtainable in a single visit.

Galaxy heavily alters the level for each star and they're all linear paths anyway.
