Is this the best RPG you've played in a long time?

It is for me. I wasn't feeling it from JRPGs last gen. FF 13 series was dull and boring as hell IMO. Didn't really feel it from Ni No Kuni. I never played Xenoblade Chronicles (I hear it's great though!). Tales of Graces f was good and Xillia was good also but not great (the dungeon layouts are horrible).

But this game is something else. This game reminded me why I fell in love with Final Fantasy in the first place. A new take on a traditional battle system, wonderful soundtrack, and the story so far, although not great, reminds me of the classic Final Fantasies. I don't know about you guys but I'm simply not able to put down the 3DS while playing this game.

So how about you guys? I'd like to hear your thoughts!

it's the best JRPG I've played since, well, Radiant Historia which wasn't all that long ago.

It was until chapter 5. Then it just started getting tedious and repetitive.

Game of the year for me so far. Still waiting for games on the PS4. No RPGs on there yet. As far as traditional turn based RPGs go, this is the best one I've played to date.

Best I've played since FF12.

Nah. I mean, I'm enjoying the game, but not particularly more than I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII or Devil Survivor: Overclocked. Frankly, I expect to get more replay value out of DS: O than I will from this game, and I already have gotten (way) more replay out of FFXIII.

In random order of some JRPGs I remember from the last two or three years (likely inspired by the posts in this thread): Tales of Xillia had a great combat system, but its story was horrendous. Ni No Kuni was fun-spirited, but really, really boring after the first half or so--even when its story ramped up, it was just too slow for me to love it. Radiant Historia was fantastic, but it was too short; I'd love to see it as a full-length console title. FF13 was garbage.

I should note that I've only just finished Chapter One, but so far I'm liking this game far more than all of those titles listed. I don't anticipate it beating out Xenoblade Chronicles for the spot of my favorite JRPG in maybe the last three years or so, but so far I'm really pleased with it. It's Final Fantasy done right, which I haven't really felt since FFX (I know FFXII is divisive; unfortunately I wasn't that impressed with it).

Same here! Xillia and Graces f had great combat system. But pathetic story and dungeon layouts. One of the worst I have ever seen in a JRPG game. Ni No Kuni was really charming but I never got hooked so I stopped playing it. Final Fantasy XIII was horrible. Talk about unmemorable characters. The gameplay was pretty linear, combat system was boring, and bad storytelling. the only redeemable quality for me was its graphics.

Xenoblade was magic for me. Loved that game!

BD is definitely the best rpg I played since then though.

Unless you include action RPGs or less "pure" RPGs. Then I would include Witcher 2, Kingdoms of Amalur, Grimrock and a handfull of others.

But yes, BD is defibitely in the top 5 for me in the last few years.
