I personally have two or three weapon types, long blade, blunt weapon, and short blade, just so that I can play with different weapons. Though what you like to do is completely up to you.

you can get shadowsting, one of the best single handed longblades in the game, & several other good items if you travel to thirsk in solstheim, they're in a hollow tree stump behind thirsk. you can do this at a low level if you just avoid enemies & make a run there. assuming you have the goty edition. you can find detailed instructions on how to get there in the beginner's guide faq, @ the bottom of the faq. http://www.gamefaqs.com/xbox/915084-the-elder-scrolls-iii-morrowind-game-of-the-year/faqs/22532

oh & there is a guy nw of seyda neen on the road that falls out of the sky near a book you will see in the road, that has some decent items on him.
