Why are the SOCOM save files so huge?

I just got SOCOM 2, and despite never taking it online, the save is 3 MB. That's insane! --- One Thousand Points!

I asked the same thing on the SOCOM 2 board some guy said "Back when the game was released, there were several patches to fix glitches and balance the game. That was many years ago." but still is ridiculous because SOCOM & SOCOM 3 don't require that much of space + some huge games like GTA require almost nothing
Usually stems from the save file not going through an actual compression phase, prior to the write on the memory card. If the dev team fails to incorporate that code you always get larger files.

I just opened up some save files from this site on the computer and they did indeed have a file called "PATCHFILE.DAT" which was 1.95 MB. --- http://eric-3.deviantart.com/ http://backloggery.com/eric3
The socom 2 file incorporates the patches into the save file, most of that is empty space until you log online and download the patch. I would do that soon because the servers are getting shut down next month. SOCOM 3 save file is 500KB I think, but the patch is 3MB and is a separate file.

Never played SOCOM online but i don't think you are missing much unless you love online gameplay with other users other games with huge over 1,000 savefiles are: Drakan the Ancients Gates Max Payne 2 Hitman Blood Money Coldwinter such a waste of space sometimes i wonder if they did it on purpose just to make you buy more memory cards

Personally, I've no idea what data each individual games developer uses in their respective 'saves' or how they compile it all but it seems odd that there's such a huge disparity in file size. How does Drakan: The Ancient Gates merit 1.5mb of real estate yet FFX comes in at under 100kb? IIRC, the PS2 save file for Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI (1.5mb) is many times larger than its PC counterpart. . . --- lysa-tully.nom

I can understand huge savefiles in games like Drakan, FF and other RPG's.. but games like SOCOM or Coldwinter which are Action games is ridiculous since they barely have levels I don't understand it either |
