someone from my school is trying to unload his 6 months old gaming desktop, he's letting it go for $525. here are the specs he sent me:

Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 AM3+
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE 3.2GHz AM3
GPU: XFX ATI Radeon HD6870 1 GB DDR5
PSU: Corsair CX600 600W 80 Plus Certified
Optical Drive: LiteOn 24X DVD-RW SATA
RAM: 4 GB 2x2 1333MHz PC3-1066 DDR3 DIMM
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit (Full) DVD

now I'm in the market for a mid-range intel desktop but everything I've tried to put together is more expensive than this. I also need a monitor which is another reason why I'm considering it, but I would like some opinions on whether it's worth it at the price. thanks.

it's alright for the price.

the processor is the weaker part of the setup but at least the mobo allows you to update without needing to swap the whole thing out.

If console gaming is so cheap then why do I have to spend $600~ in order to play Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 3 and Halo 3?

yeah the price sounds right. you would be saving around 150 in parts.

Unless piledriver is any good and somehow compatible with that mobo, there's nothing worth upgrading to unless it can be had for a ridiculously low price.

Yeah seems good. You can always upgrade to Intel later and just change out mobo and CPU.
